Strategic litigation unit additional information

Description

The Strategic Litigation Unit, based at Lawyers for Human Rights’ Pretoria Law Clinic, has achieved some notable successes since its inception in 2003. The Strategic Litigation Unit focuses much of its attention in ensuring just administrative action for indigent persons and communities. A considerable amount of time is also spent on unfair discrimination, refugee law, and increasingly, land reform matters. The Unit is headed by David Cote who along with a group of dedicated attorneys and advocates conduct most of the litigation work.

The services of outside counsel are also regularly engaged when necessary. The Unit’s objective is to use the law as a positive instrument for change and to deepen the democratisation of South African society. To this end, it provides legal services free of charge to vulnerable, marginalised and indigent individuals and communities who are victims of unlawful infringements of their Constitutional rights.
