10 Ways the New African Union Protocol on the Rights to a Nationality and the eradication of Statelessness in Africa Benefits Children

Date: 08/04/2025

Intro paragraph:

On 18 February 2024, the African Union adopted the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights Relating to the Specific Aspects of the Right to a Nationality and the Eradication of Statelessness in Africa — a historic step toward ending statelessness on the continent. Statelessness happens when a person isn’t recognised as a citizen by any country. For children, this can mean growing up without a citizenship, birth certificate, or ID — making it harder to access education, healthcare, protection, or to feel like they belong. This Protocol is a bold commitment to inclusion, legal identity, and dignity. It also encourages African States to cooperate and work together to solve nationality-related challenges across borders and protect every child’s right to belong.
