Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) has prepared this submission on behalf of the #NotFitforPurpose campaign, a coalition of civil society organisations, activists, survivors, and concerned citizens fighting for a fully functional and accountable National Council (Council) that will effectively address GBVF in South Africa.
Moreover, these organisations and individuals have been deeply invested and actively participating in the GBVF sector through their involvement as part of the #TotalShutdown movement, participation in the first Presidential Summit on Gender Based Violence and Femicide in 2018, served in the Interim Steering Committee that led to the development of the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, served on the Presidential Summit Planning Committee for the Second Presidential Summit on GBVF from 2022-2023, and made several submissions on the (then) National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill.
