Intro paragraph:
This comprehensive submission is presented in response to the call for inputs for the preparation of the Secretary-General’s report on the human rights of migrants, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 78/217. The rationale for this contribution is rooted in LHR’s four-decade-long frontline engagement with the realities of migration in South Africa. Our daily work provides us with a unique, evidence-based, and granular understanding of the chasm between the state’s international human rights obligations and the lived experiences
of migrants, asylum-seekers, and refugees within its jurisdiction. We do not observe these issues from a distance; we litigate them in court, document them in detention centres, and hear them directly from our clients in our offices and at border communities.
